Emoji Shortcodes for Discord, Slack and GitHub

How :shortcodes: work, where they differ, and how to copy them from this site.

A shortcode is a text name between colons — :fire:, :red_heart: — that chat apps replace with the emoji as you type. They come from early forum software and were popularised by GitHub, Slack and Discord. All three use broadly the same list for standard Unicode emojis, with small differences for custom and legacy names.

Using them

  • Slack: type : and two letters to get suggestions; Slack also converts :) and :D by default.
  • Discord: same syntax; custom server emojis also use shortcodes.
  • GitHub: shortcodes work in issues, comments, READMEs and commit messages.
  • WhatsApp, iMessage, Instagram: shortcodes are not supported — paste the emoji itself.

Copying shortcodes here

Set the output format to :shortcode: on the generator, or press Copy :shortcode: on any emoji’s meaning page. Shortcodes on this site follow GitHub’s list, which Slack and Discord accept for all standard emojis.
